At a South Carolina auction sale, Maya carried a note reading: “walk, trot, canter under saddle.” A rescue organization called HERD took her into their program, and eventually Maya came to North Carolina to start a new life. Originally known as Jazzy-Saphira, we re-named her in honor of Maya Angelou.
Maya is a master of emotional detection. When a student tries to bury difficult feelings, Maya senses their inner tension. She cues them into what they are avoiding or haven’t yet realized. This can look like signals of agitation or simply walking away from the teen. Maya has a wonderful ability to come back and connect after students honor and address their emotions. Her high expectations for emotional regulation unlock powerful breakthroughs for CORRAL’s teens.
