Dear CORRAL Champion,
As a part of the CORRAL community, you already know about the remarkable achievements of our girls. Failing grades routinely change to A-B honor roll. A girl who comes into the program barely able to make eye contact ends up speaking to a crowd of 300 at the 2016 Derby Dinner. This year, as we rally together again to support this incredible mission, I want to describe what it’s really like for our girls to make healing changes. It all comes down to moments, and this is the story of one girl’s moment of insight about herself.
Not long ago, things weren’t going well for Kendra with Bob, our draft horse. “Bob’s too stubborn,” she said. “I’m just gonna go back to Chester. Then when I’m done with Chester I’ll go back to Bob.” This was Kendra’s pattern: when the going got tough, she gave up! Understanding this pattern, her mentor pushed back: “Oh that breaks my heart for Bob! You’re just going to use him and move on?” “Gosh, Ms. Lauren, when you say it that way it sounds real harsh!” said Kendra.
Standing nearby, our licensed therapist took over. Knowing Kendra responds to encouragement, she simply stood next to her, telling her how capable she is, how well she does when she puts in effort.
Soon Bob began to move and respond better to Kendra. Conversation turned to her failing math grades. Our therapist said, “Bob is kinda like your math, isn’t he?” “Well yeah, I guess so,” came the response. Then Kendra expressed concern about how her math grades might keep her from going on a CORRAL field trip she wanted to attend. This was an opening for our therapist. From there she continued the work of setting Kendra up for her next moment to make a better choice in life.
There is a way for the encouragement, self-reflection and focused effort from this experience to become Kendra’s new pattern. She needs to experience it every week, in moments like these, here with us at CORRAL. Not all moments are so tough — many of them are incredibly positive and wonderful to hear! But in the true CORRAL spirit, I didn’t want to write to you about fluff. I chose to tell you the truth: This work is hard, and the girls often don’t make it easy. Yet these are the moments that build new patterns of relationship, better study habits and in the end create each and every remarkable CORRAL outcome.
Here’s another truth: Every year we have the privilege of serving 20 girls just like Kendra. We have always believed their potential has no limits. We work every day to show them they have unlimited possibilities in life! However there are more girls out there we can help, so over the next ten years we plan to widen our reach and serve 80 girls per year in the Riding Academy and 1,500 girls in our Join the Herd program. We currently have 33 girls stuck on our waiting list, which means they are stuck in unhealthy patterns. We don’t accept this, and I’m betting you won’t either.
To have a deep impact at CORRAL requires relationship. Without that, we would have had no way to help Kendra make progress that day. Our relationship with you is equally important! We are so grateful for the time you have invested in our mission. It is now time for us to humbly invite you to give in a new way. We would like to invite you to help us reach our year-end goal of raising $150,000.
Will you help us build more Kendra moments by donating today?
